Volunteer Information


Several opportunities for different types of work and at different times for volunteering are available. Please browse the opportunities listed below and choose the one(s) best suited to your interests, abilities and schedule. CaSandra Reyes, is always glad to answer questions about any of the programs. Begin Again Boutique – Would you like to help families in need to clothe themselves and their families? Volunteers are needed to sort clothing on Saturdays 11:00 until finished and to distribute free clothing to those in need Sundays 4:00 to 5:30. Casandra at for more information.


Books for Kids Library – Do you love books? We received and gave out over 2000 donated and purchased books in 2009 to help encourage reading among disadvantaged children. We believe reading is essential for success in life, but handling this many books takes a lot of work! Books always need sorting and rearranging so that kids can find the perfect book that they want to take home. To speak with CaSandra call (806)762-0829 or follow the link to email her so that we can arrange a time for you to volunteer in the library.


Creative Ministries – Would you like to help elementary-age disadvantaged children learn self esteem and discipline through their participation in creative projects? Guitar and piano lessons will also be offered. If you have a creative soul and an interest in working with children, this may be the program for you! The program meets 3:00-5:00 Monday and Wednesday during the school year. Contact Jan at for more information or to volunteer.


Fiesta Domingo – Do you enjoy cooking or serving hungry people? On Sunday evenings 5:30-6:30 a free home-cooked meal is offered to around 100 people. If you’d like to just come and help serve, simply show up around 5:00 at 2005 Avenue T (in the same building with Asbury United Methodist Church). Go to the basement . There will be plenty of people around to help you find your way. In the basement, you can ask for Debby or Sharissa or the person in charge, and tell them you want to help. You will be put to work right away!

If you, or a group you belong to, want to prepare a meal one or more times during the year, contact
CaSandra. She will be glad to talk to you about the details.


Liberty Learning Center – If you enjoy working with teen youth and especially if you are called to help them find their way to the Lord, this may be the volunteer opportunity for you. LLC youth have not succeeded in public high schools and come to this center to learn in a more self-determined and experiential manner. The school has volunteer opportunities Monday through Thursday, 9:00-3:00 and is especially in need of math, art and music tutors and volunteers to drive students to local sites for learning experiences. Lighthouse at Asbury – Would you like to help an adult to work towards a better life for themselves and for their family? Tutors are needed to help guide adult students who come for free basic literacy skills, English as a second language, or GED preparation lessons on computer-based programs. Tutors will be taught all the skills they need to act as an adult tutor. Tutors do not have to have special skills or know a language other than English. Tutors must be willing to volunteer 2 hours per week. Times and dates are flexible, arranged for the convenience of the tutor and student. For information, contact Esther at (806)762-0829.


Living Abundantly – Would you like to help young people have fun and develop their character? Volunteers are needed to help with a large sports camp for disadvantaged youth near the end of July. Throughout the year there are opportunities on Saturdays during the school year and on other days in the summer to help with sports and character-development sessions. Loaves and Fishes – Are you concerned about hunger? Volunteers are needed to help distribute food to those in need 4:00-5:30 on Sundays. Contact CaSandra for additional information.


Shalom Readers and Shalom Kids – Do you enjoy working with elementary age children? Volunteer tutors and helpers are needed for our after-school program for the children of Dupre Elementary School and for our summer program for neighborhood children. The after-school program operates 3:00-5:00 Tuesday and Thursday. Volunteers much pass a background check and be willing to commit to a full semester or to present a special program.
