Project Lighthouse Project Lighthouse is sponsored by Asbury UMC coordinated by Joe Reeder, Esther Moses and Mary Jo Sanders to offer English as a Second Language, Basic Literacy Skills and GED preparation. This computer-based program was developed by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, which chose Asbury to implement the program in this area. Learners commit to attending classes twice a week. The classes are scheduled at the convenience of the learner and the guide. The ESL and Basic literacy courses start with games that teach basic computer use skills such as pointing and clicking. Once the user can point and click, they work through a series of interesting and fun games to learn letters and sounds, then building to words, and finally to sentences. Once the learner can read sentences, brief stories and Bible passages are introduced at the option of the learner. Volunteers do not need to know any foreign language and do not have to have any computer skills. They must attend one a training session and commit to spend 2 hours a week helping adults to advance their literacy through the program. This ministry truly offers you as a volunteer the opportunity to change someone’s life. |
